RAM not recognised and computer not boot up

I have tried to upgrade my computer from 64MB to 256MB but when I swap the DIMM cards the computer starts up, HD check and CD Check (can hear but can't see it on screen) and nothing else, no screen no beep!

When I put the old card back in all fine, but when I put the 256MB in the DIMM 2 slot the computer boots up but the screens have black lines and alot of letters and characters. It eventually crashes before WIN98 fully loaded. I also noticed that the 256MB was hotter than the 64 MB.

The manual for the m/board says that it should accept 2 x 256MB never mind just the one!

Details are as follows:
BIOS DATE: 06/05/00
BIOS TYPE: Award MOdular BIOS v6.00PG
BIOS ID: 06/05/2000-i810W83627HF-6A69MJI9C-00
BIOS EVAL: V.912AF/913AF C04 06-05-2000
CHIPSET: Intel WHITNEY 82810E rev 3
Superio Winbound 627F/HF rev 3 found on port 2Eh.

I am a novice and have never BIOS updated. somple language please.

PS. the computer manufacturer has password protected the BIOS setup. How do I get in? The manual talks about changing jumpers, if I do that will I risk not getting the Hard drive etc back again?

It's JetWay J-912AF/913AF board. You can find the latest BIOS ("11/23/2000-i810-W83627HF-6A69MJ19C-00") at http://www.j-mark.com/dl/dl.html. Might be BIOS problem but also the new module can be bad.

When you're on that page, press Ctrl+F (search) and enter 912AF.

Hi again

I have looked at the jetway site and notice that I have the bios eval C04 where as the zip file is co6.

does this mean that although they are the same date that may be the fix?
