What really is my mobo manufacturer?

Hi.

BIOS Type: American Megatrends
BIOS ID: 61-1218-001169-00111111-071595-440BX-1440B000
OEM Sign-On: A6119P2 V1.65 121898

Now, before I discovered about BIOS strings I identified my board as MSI-6119 (Micro-Star International 6119). If we consider the BIOS string, I reckon, if you ignore the two proceeding zeros, the number 001169 identifies the board as an MSI board.

Here it is:

http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/pb/mb/tacoma.htm

Yet the AMI motherboard utility AMIMBID.EXE tells me I have an NEC mobo!! I don't understand this!! There is some confusion hee, although I think I must have an MSI mobo. I must surely??

If I assume I have an MSI 6119 mobo, then as far as I understand, for a BIOS upgrade I should be choosing among the follwing BIOS upgrades:

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/b ... hp?UID=105

Is this correct, will this page contain the latest upgrade for my mobo if it is an MSI 6119 mobo?

I've not looked at the NEC site.

Thanks. Rich.

I read what was om mobo.

Okay, this is what is printed on my motherboard:

Micro-Star Model: MS-6119

MS 6119 Ver:1.1 BX2

There is a BIOS chip and a sticker on the chip reads:

686
AMIBIOS
Copyright 1995
American Megatrends
CT3 7349

To recap other info from a BIOS utilty is:

BIOS Type: American Megatrends
BIOS ID: 61-1218-001169-00111111-071595-440BX-1440B000
OEM Sign-On: A6119P2 V1.65 121898

And this is my board:

http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/pb/mb/tacoma.htm

I think then the mobo is a "Tacoma".

Thing is I may have three options to look for updated BIOS and the question is which one would you go for normally? The board manufacturer, the PC manufacturer or the BIOS manufacturer?

Board Manufacturer is MSI: Here is some BIOS, but which one to chooose:

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/b ... hp?UID=105

Or Packard Bell since the PC is a Packard Bell PC (Platinum V2001 V2) They call the mobo "The Packard Bell media Blaster Motherboard (Version 2).

Or the BIOS maker AMI.

My PC has 3DFX or whatever it is, was bought souped up for games I think. PC Bought in 1998. I am about to fit new 80Gb HDD and want the latest BIOS. Using Win 98SE.

MSI 6119 OEM-Version for Packard Bell

MSI Bios might work or not - you have to choose the correct bios as there are 61119 with CPU PnP function (jumpeless/jumperfree) or a standard 6119 with Dip-Switches and/or jumpers

Well, I installed the 80Gb drive and seems to work.

Got eager to install so I did. PC reports the 80Gb drive as 80Gb. Probably then my BIOS okay. I thought I'd have problems.

I never changed the BIOS at all. I'm running MSI system BIOS ver 1.60, with AMI "core" AMIBIOS Easy Setup Utilities ver 1.16. Both from 1998. I do wonder whether the HDD setup disk altered something. I was surprised that my PC can handle an 80Mb given it's 1998 vintage.

HDD setup disk as in drive overlay software. Yes, that would explain some things.
