update:

The serial and PS/2 mouse ports are not working. Does it has something to do with BIOS update? When I try a serial mouse, it cannot detect. When PS/2 mouse is attached, it can detect but wont run, right click is also functioning. 3 serial mouse and 3 PS/2 mouse used about no progress. Any inputs?

Clear CMOS, then load Setup or Performance defaults in Bios.
Are you sure you have a P4VMM2 or do you have a P4VMM ?

What Biosversion did you choose ?

Its the P4VMM2L.ROM since it has an on-board net card.

Start in safe mode, kick out all mice from device manager and try again.

The link Kuriaki posted mentions fixes related to the PS/2 mouse, so since you have flashed the latest version you should be OK now according to this.

Did you install Windows fresh after you updated the BIOS and loaded defaults or before? If before another clean install may still help.

One test I like to do on a blank hard disk is to boot to a floppy and then try to run 98 Setup. I find if the mouse works on the first Windows setup screen it will work when Windows itself is running.

Thats the steps i foolowed before you post your suggestions. At first GUI screen during fresh install of Win98SE, the PS/2 is detected but only horizontal is OK vertical is sluggish. At the desktop, mouse function is still the same but the right click function is working.

So sounds like you installed fresh 98 before you upgraded and reset the BIOS.

Therefore may be a good idea to back up any data required and do another fresh install.

OK flashed the latest bios. Result ok Still the mouse at PS/2 port is not functioning well. I am now convinced that its a problem outside bios. Many thnx will look for solution for this type of problem. Many thnx to all.

To be clear, have you followed these steps?

1) Update to latest BIOS as advised by Kuriaki.
2) Load BIOS defaults and make sure PS/2 ports for KB and mouse are enabled in BIOS.
3) Backed up any data required of hard disk, then formatted hard disk.
4) Peformed fresh installation of 98SE.

Make sure when you follow the above steps that you have a known good working keyboard and mouse. In one of your posts where you describe only horizontal mouse motion it sounds like the mouse itself may be defective. Also make sure you have the kb and mouse plugged into their corresponding PS/2 ports.
