Hi

I changed the monitor setting from 16 Bit to 256 colours and now when I reboot the computer the monitor will boot up, windows 98 starts and then stops and goes to a black screen after doing a scan disc. I can not change back to 16 bit colour screen resolution.

What has happened to my BIOS or CMOS settings? :(

I am usins a AMD K6 / 2 - 450 processessor and 576 megs of Ram.

All information gratefully received

This isn't a BIOS issue. This has to do with your VGA card and your monitor.
Setting it to 256 colors might have activated a refresh rate your monitor cannot support.
Are you using an old monitor?

Hi El cheapo dude

Thank you for the reply, yes it is an older 15 inch monitor and yes you are right perhaps it can not refresh.

How can I fix the problem when I can not see the screen on the monitor?

Try hitting F8 when booting to enter Safe Mode. You'll then be able to access your Windows desktop and perform the changes.

Thank you the problem is solved.

Continual hitting of the F8 button from the time the computer is turned on allowed me to go to safe mode then I made the adjustments and the monitor returned to normal. Thanks to all.
