I want to update the BIOS on a PC-Chips M729 mobo, but am concirned about using the (990224s.rom) upgrade from there site.

Does anyone have any recommendations on ghe best way to go about upgrading the BIOS on this Board:
1) Which BIOS to use
2) Which Flasher to use
3) Special instructions

1) Seems like the correct BIOS.
2) Use AMIFLASH 6.34
3) No special instructions.

I can not find ver 6.34 of the AMIFLASH anywhere.

I tried out the BIOS upgrade with AMIFlASH ver 8.14, but ran into an issue, and I am not sure if it is a problem or not.
The program began to run and then listed "error 9 - The Bios Tag is incorrect" . The lines of info that the screen displayed are as follows:

>Chipset Type ALi M1621/1543
>Old Bios - Release 08/05/1998 S
>New Bios - Release 02/24/1999 S
>Old Bios Tag is <725000> -- New Bios Tag is <M729_v1.2 - 5123
>Error 9 - The Bios Tag is incorrect
>Press [Enter} to continue or [Esc] to Abort...

I am sure that this is indeed an M729 ver 1.2 board, as it has the BXCel, 66/100, chipset and says v 1.2 in small print in the extreme top left corner of the board, above the keyboard plug.
The M725 has the 66FSB only chipset.
The M726 has the BXCel chipset, but also has a completely different layout.

So . . . . is this just a check to let the user know that the new BIOS is different from the old one, or is it telling me that I have a wrong Bios for this board?

Thanks for your help
Roger

If you are sure, then go ahead and flash. PCCHIPS occasionally made radical changes to portions of the BIOS ID string, so it's quite normal that a flasher will complain about it.

Thanks for the confirmation.

And BTW, thank you all for unlocking this thread. I sincerely appreciate it

I ran the update, and all went well. Two thing that I saw right away are that it now recognizes my Cely 366 @ 550 as running at 550 instead of 500mhz, and that the BIOS string states the MoBo, Chipset, and Release date (02/24/1999)

Thanks again
