My MSI motherboard MS6147 Ver 1 BX7 caught the Chernobyl bug and was returned to the supplier (Tiny Computers) who apparently installed an AMI BIOS dated July 1995. I now need to update the BIOS but the only BIOS available on the MSI Web site for this board is an Award BIOS.

Apparently the MS6147 board can use either an AMI BIOS or an Award Bios. Can anyone tell me how to upgrade my AMI BIOS with an Award BIOS or suggest possible alternatives?

BIOS Type: AMI
BIOS Date: 07/15/95
BIOS ID String: 61-0504-001169-00111111-071595-440BX-1440B000
OEM Signon: A6147O1 V1.1B1 083198
Chipset: INTEL 440BX/ZX REV 2
Super I/O: WINBOND 977TF REV 0 FOUND AT PORT 3F0H

1995 is AMI Core Bios date

According to the Bios OEM signon your Bios is version 1.1B1 or 1.1Beta1 08/31/1998

What do you need the Award Bios for ?

If you want to crossflash to Award Bios use Uniflash and the Award Bios file from MSI

1). I upgraded from Win 98 2nd edition to Win XP Pro no problems except the Internet connection fails due to the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) system unexpectedly closing every time.

2). I thought the bios was 1995  I should have realised that Win XP Pro would have given notification if it was an outdated BIOS.

3). I feel vulnerable because the AMI BIOS seems to be a 'one off'.

4). I was thinking of a CPU upgrade to a PowerLeap PL-iP3/T 1.4Ghz instead of the Pentium II processor currently installed.
Details:
Slot 1
1.4Ghz Upgrade
Intel CPU
256k Cache
100Mhz FSB
Works on 440BX motherboards

Are you suggesting it is not necessary to change/update the AMI BIOS?

I must say I feel better obout the AMI BIOS now with the information you provided - thanks.
