Neccessary Things to know before...

Greetings to all,
I am a newbie for exprementing in BIOS. I want to know what are the things we should know before change/update/edit any BIOS setting.
I mean for eg, If i want to remove the INTEL original logo which comes at startup ..and instead of that i want to put something else...
Is the above thing possible...i mean possible thru any software/utility...or need to know the chip level repairing.
and anyone can give me any kind of knowledge related to BIOS i wil be very very thankful.
