Can a BIOS upgrade add ATA support, from ATA33 and up?

I appreciate that an ATA33 board can probably not be BIOS upgraded beyond ATA33 as from memory the pinout on ATA33 prevents ATA66/100/133 cables from being attached. However, once having an ATA66 or better board, can a BIOS upgrade upgrade support to ATA100 or ATA133? Or is the ATA spec purely a hardware limitation?

Thanks in anticipation of any responses.

It's a hardware (chipset) limitation.

But this hardware limitation does not prevent you or other users to connect ATA66/100/133 devices to your board - they will run only with ATA33 but they'll run
