Acer Aspire 5520 on a loop boot

Hi, there!

I'm in a big trouble.

Yesterday I have just finished to use my laptop, closed the lid and went to bed, sleep. I put my laptop to do some downloads.

Today I woke up and realize that it has a blinking green light on Power button. I only succeed in turn off the laptop by disconnecting it from energy and battery pack.

Well, I can't access any kind of system, neither BIOS.

Specifications: Acer Aspire 5520-5142 | Athlon 64 X2 TK-55 | NVIDIA GeForce 7000M | 3GB RAM | 15.4" | 160GB

What happens:

1) Laptop is diconnected from energy and battery.

2) I connect the power adaptor.

3) Then I press the POWER button.

4) The green light goes on, HD led blinks ONE time, CDROM does a common noise. Observe that those routines would happen even if laptop would start normally.

5) About 3-4 seconds after I have started it (STEP 3) the POWER green light goes off. Moments after that, it goes on again and then all routine on STEP 4 goes on again. And about 3-4 seconds the green light goes off again. A LOOP.

Some considerations: I can't turn laptop off by pressing power button 4 seconds. I believe that it happens because the laptop doesn't get enought time on. So, there no many ways to turn it off unless disconnecting it from energy.

I have already opened it and removed HD and memory. Without memory and no beep was heard. The same auckward routine is displayed. Including the HD led that remains to blink ONE time.

I have already disconnected it from energy and keep pressed power button for about 3 minutes. I heard that it would solve the problem.

The laptop was on a table with good ventilation.

When laptop is on (3-4 secs) I have tried to press CAPS or NUM LOCK but those led do not lit. Only the HD led lit ONE time every cicle.

I'm on myself with no warranty.

I have searched over internet and couldn't find a solution. I have a good knowledge about those stuffs. I can say that it's not an OS problem. I can't access even the POST screen, neither BIOS configs.

Some experiencied one has faced some problem like mine? Would it be easily solved?

I ending my mastership dissertation. This couldn't happen in such worse time.

I thanks for any contribution!!!

Regards,

Krebs Pinto

Well. Despite reply above...

I have disassembled part of my laptop. I have removed memory, HD, Optical Drive, Wireless and modem. When I turned my computer on, the same auckward behavior was displayed.

Well, any help helps!

Hello!
I fixed the power cycling by reflowing the motherboard's nvidia NB/GPU (acer aspire 5520, not 5520G)

Hey to all,
i had quite the same problem with my laptop (ACER 5520g), and after digging so long i gave up - the thing that happened was that North bridge (componented on Motherboard) had overburned (or something like this, i'm not an expert) - on a servis they told me this is the consequence of too many dust inside, fen wasn't able to cool down the thing (although i have to say i cleaned dust every few months out).
Anyway, they suggested me to change the whole motherboard, so in the end i decided to rather buy a new computer... surely not Acer though.

Hope your problem is less sensitive...

u.

Hello, mhanor. Can you explain how you fixed this power cycling?
I have a problem with my notebook. When I press the power button it turns on for 2 or 3 seconds and shuts down, and it keeps doing it automatically. The only way to stop it is to remove the battery.

In fact I have the same problem like, krebsufv, already described.

Please, help us, if there is anything possible to do to fix our computers.

P.S. I have Acer Aspire 5520

I had exactly the same problem with the same laptop.
I did what Siggy666 told with the oven at 200°.

And it worked!
The laptop is repaired. :D

MY girlfriend is having the same problem with the Aspire 5520, Power light comes on, HDD light blinks, fan kicks over for 1/2 a second. Then the power goes off, and continues in this loop until you removed the battery and/or power cable to kill power.

Never heard of reflowing any cards, pretty common sensical once you think about it heh.

So to avoid having to do this i pulled everything but the MOBO out, Ram, HDD, Optical, CPU, Fan, HEat Piping ETC. To no avail, I am going to try this reflowing process tonight.

ALso i noticed in a previous post you said heat Oven to 200 degree CELCIUS hehe, i imagine you meant farenheit. Will post the outcome of the process. Thanks for the advice guys

Hello my friend
The solution like you described it works well, but when passed 8 days the problem turn again.
So i repeated the operation and it works again. They passed near a week working and at this moment the problem it back for the third time. What can i do? the solution is not permanent and is not praticable disassembly 1 time a week the computer.

Thankyou for your time

put a smal weight on top of the northbridge chip when heating it in the oven (something that can withstand 200 degrees like a little stone) to push it just a bit down when heating, this way the solder joints may stick better.

It's obviously a design flaw and maybe it's time to prepare a class action suit against Acer on this.

Well, i thank you all very much for your advice, and well detailed directions.
The reflowing in the oven did the trick for sure, computer booted up no problems.
Im worried now that I read about this problem resurfacing. The stone on top of the North bridge is not a bad idea, that is, if the problem arises again. hopefully it wont.
Thank you all again for the advice, hope you all have good luck with this being a one time fix, i'm keeping my fingers crossed

"FREE FIX Those so called experts would charge you $100 for the same process"

-----> Those so called experts that do these "reflows" are NO experts at all. NO BGA rework would ever cost $99. The "real deal" would cost about $150 for single pieces.

"This is BASICLy Reflowing, while the motherboard is under 200°C the solder joints melt and the little cracks are filled"

-----> Lead Free solder requires 215 degrees C to melt AT the solder joint. Applying 200c to the board in an oven is NOT reflowing the solder. You're warping the board to make temparary contact.

I'm just trying to keep the content good on this site. There is WAY too much inaccurate information floating around the web and they seem to filter into the messages boards and then spread from board to board like an information virus.
