What is the point of a vga to hdmi cable? Ok so I bought a vga to hdmi cable to try to connect my laptop to my HDTV, only to fail at getting it to work. I looked online and it said something about vga being analog and hdmi being digital, so the two couldn't even communicate. I also read that you can buy a converter box for 200$, but you don't need the converter cord in that case.

There's no such thing like a VGA (15 pin SubD) to HDMI cable because - as you already found out - their signals are incompatible. You can however get a converter box to convert the analog VGA signals to digital HDMI signals. Those boxes start at around 30EUR but the quality of the converted signal will inferior to a native digitial output.
so you should either use a digital graphics output - like HDMI or DVI-D - or use the VGA input of your TV (if there's one) with your analog laptop output.
