Dead ACER Aspire 3100 laptop

Hiya,
I am not a computer expert so please forgive me!!
We have a ACER Aspire 3100 laptop which is about 18 months old. My boyfriend took it to work on Friday and it was fine & then when we bought it home, tried to switch it on & nothing. We left it plugged in to see if the battery was dead & it just needed a bit of life injecting into it & it was getting warm underneath but still nothing when we pressed the ON button.
Is anyone aware of any fault with thrm or does anyone have any ideas what is up with it and how easy it would be to fix? (there is a computer-fixing shop near me!)
