Hi All!

I`ve just replaced a cdrom drive in my notebook, because the original one died, now when i boot up neither drive is recognised!
However when i disconnect either drive, the other is detected.
I think it`s a master/slave problem but i can`t see any way of changing it in the bios.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Master/Slave is jumper-set, and not BIOS-set. Remove the CD unit and look for a jumper behind it.

There are no jumpers on my notebook drives.
I thought all notebook drives factory set to cable select?
That`s why i thought it must be set up from the bios.
Please correct me if i`m wrong, if not, how else can i set the drives up?
:(

The CD drive on my laptop is on the secondary IDE controller. Is there anything in your laptop setup which can disable an IDE controller ?

Thanks for the reply NickS.
Do you mean in the bios or on the mobo?
There are a couple of blocks of dip switches on the mobo, but without a manual i`m a bit wary of touching these.
The replacement drive is identical to the original apart from being 24x instead of 20x.
I read somewhere else that it might be a voltage thing, but i wouldn`t know about that.
If i put the old drive back in it detects both drives again!
Frustration is setting in. :?

Why don't you tell us the brand and model of your CDROM? Didn't it come with a manual (for the master/slave jumper setting)?

Also, the brand and model of the laptop won't hurt to know as well..

Thanks to joe, ajzchips,NickS for your replies.
The original (dead) cdrom rom drive was a TEAC 220E slimline.
The new cdrom drive is a TEAC 224E slimline with no documentation.
The laptop has no manufacturer markings, but after doing an FCC ID search, it would appear to have been made by SPICA computer corporation.
Their web site no longer seems to be active.
The FCC ID number is 17GCORE586.
There is also a serial number on the base v80999002.
The bios string 2A5UQACBC-00 seems to refer to an Opti firebridge 2 chipset?
When running ctbios it also mentions an oem as ARTDEX if that helps or just confuses the situation even more.
I`m really stuck with this one, the laptop runs fine with just the hdd installed, but a bit useless without a working cdrom drive.
Thanks for all your help guys.

Please read this:

I do hope this is the final solution to your problem.

Thanks ajzchips!!

That link was a great help, however on teac`s site it does refer to dip switches that don`t appear to be on my cdrom drive although they should be according to their web page.
I gave Teac a call on their freephone number and was told they would ring me back in 10mins.
Still waiting for a response.
I will try again today.
If they can`t help i guess no-one can.
I really appreciate your efforts and thanks again.
Cheers.
Chris.

Try pulling the top cover off the drive and looking at the circuit board inside.
