After upgraded my bios, a HOT628 and running Win98, my network card and modem would not work correctly. They would be installed but when dialing up with the modem, for example, an error message would come up saying that the modem was not properly installed. And same with the network card, in Control Panel->System, there would be an error there saying the network card did not exist or the drivers were not working properly. Both drivers and cards were installed properly and this only occured after I flashed the BIOS. I believe there was no IRQ set to either of these devices but I don't know how to remedy the problem. Can somebody help? I will provide more details if needed.

If you remove both of the devices and let Windows redetect them, what is the result?

Yeah, I tried that. Plug and play picked up the device and installed "successfully," only to yield the same results. In addition to that, installation using other methods didn't seem to work, either - I scanned the COM ports and it didn't even detect anything.

I have had the same problem with a few boards
and I had to go into the devices resource listing and manually set them.
the tell tail is when you first look at the resources for the device it says that "this device is not using any (known configuration) (normal settings) please set the configuration manually.
sorry my memory is a little fuzzy.
My guess is the newer bios is trying to let the devices share an IRQ
and the cards can not, or have to be manually set to be able to work.
some times it takes up to 5 different settings/tries with reboots to work.
hope this helps
