AOpen AX6LC with latest Bios AX6LC R2.01b Apr.11.2001
recognises 40 GB Disk, but on every reboot it automatically changes size and I get hard disk failure error...

Yes, set to 'Auto'. Was 'User' - but only secondary slave failed. Primary master (same harddisk) didn't fail anyway.
Since I changed to 'Auto' no boot-errors but wrong disksize. This prevents booting my linux-server from large HD partition (GRUB error 18). I had to create a boot partition with 200 MB to get the system running. Now it works for me. But it's still worth fixing the BIOS bug, if it's one.
