My 60 GB MAXTOR 4D060H3 isn't recognized by my MSI 6160 mainboard.
I got the 1.1 BIOS dated 06-19-99. no newer version known to me...
MAXTOR have a tool on their website that should solve my problem but ALAS!, it needs to boot from floppy and I don't have any...:(
any way to get around this problem?

We can patch the BIOS for you. After flashing, it should work.

Patched BIOS sent.
The 32GB bug in the BIOS is patched. It's like any other BIOS update - you need to flash it.

If you mean you don't have a floppy drive, go and buy one. If you mean you don't have a boot diskette, go to one of the sites listed at http://www.bootdisk.com. You'll probably need one to flash the BIOS.
Tested patched BIOSes. Untested patched BIOSes.

In Windows 9x it's safe to flash BIOS from HDD when booted into "Safe mode command prompt only". Otherwise you need the floppy.

sorry for the long delay....
I received the patched BIOS, flashed it and ....

it worked!! :)

immediately after this I formatted and partionated the HD-took my old Celeron ~10 hours. that the reason why did not reply until now.
everything seems to work fine now [fingers crossed].

concerning the floppy- I just don't have one anymore. the one I had fell victim to a short circuit when I tried to plug/unplug it while the PC was running....:/
please have mercy, it was stupid, but afterwards I never thought of buying a new one. maybe I should...

anyway, thanks a lot for all the kind advice!

i got the same problem.
New HD but my MB dont recognize her.
Im very stressed because i would like to build a media server.

Okay srry, i found the updatet bios file.
i got only one problem now.
I want to use following hard disks.
1x 80 GB
1x 120 GB

No way to get them running in that system with this board???
Because updatet bios file supports only up to 64 gb.

media server using Windows XP? if so: Winblows XP supports disks upto 144PetaByte out of the box with SP1 and higher.
make sure the boot partition is inside the bios recognized space. once the OS is loaded you can use the rest of the HDD space.

But the problem is my bios does not recognize any space on the HD.
The computer hangs up by the auto detection.

I dont know what to do. Maybe i try to use the patched bios file who recognizes at least 64 GB, maybe it works.

look for a capacity limit jumper and set it. your mainboard will now recognize 32GB. once the OS is loaded you can access the rest of the drive.
you only need to set ONE drive in the bios and this would be the drive you'll have to boot from. you can leave the other drive unconfigured. it will be correctly detected once the OS is loaded.

Jumper on HD or Mainboard?
I set the jumper a few days ago (if it was the right) but windows only shows me 32 GB HD unformattet?
Why?

Should i format it then an then it works?

jumper on hdd.
you need at least SP1, at the installation you should only be able to see 32GB (_very_ clever Microsoft!). once the installation is through and at least SP1 is available you'll be able to access the rest of the drive's capacity.
and as i already wrote before: there's no need to add the other hdd to the bios. just leave it unconfigured there. it will be available once WiXP is loaded.

I think it works.
Testet it with the 80 GB.
Now i have some problems to start windows, but i should manage this.
I thinks its no problem. I reinstall windows maybe it works.

Okay i made it.

I have the OS on a 2.1 GB HD i found at cleaning up my room.
Now when i boot it only shows this one.

But in Windows is see the 2.1 and the 80 (the 120 is not installed for now)

When i now connect the 120 to the second IDE Bus where normally the CD Drive is attached, does it work correctly?????

The 2.1 is very slow but once the system is startet up its not the problem because the streaming files all are storaged at 80 or 120 GB HD.
