I have ATC-5000 with patched BIOS 1.0 08 from wims.rainbow-software.org.
I have tried to use hdd Maxtor HD040H2 without cylinder limit.
Hdd have got prepared partitions (parted at different mainboard):
1. primary 10GB
2. primary 10GB (hiden)
3. Extended (unallocated) - I wanted to use that disk space...
In BIOS: AUTO xx xx .. AUTO.
Disk recognize failed...
Next I tried in BIOS 40980 4982 255 0 19617 63 LBA
disk recognize failed...
WHY? What I must do in BIOS setup..?

Where does it give you that error and what is the exact error message? It soounds like it's still using overlay software from when it was used in the other board. If that is the case, you need to make it clean first in the other system, then start fresh in this system.

ATC-5000 comp stopped when recognizing disks... In BIOS:
PRI MASTER AUTO xx xxx .. AUTO
or
PRI MASTER - setting seen at another mainboard...
Always comp stopped (hangs) after booting.
When
PRI MASTER None ----- ----
and booting from "Linux_install":
hda: I/O ... cylinder limits 4092
xxx
hda: error (!)
So, I do not know what is the reason of that problem... Maybe I must flash my BIOS once again with the same BIOS_file..??

Did you use MaxBlast ?

No, I do not ever use Maxblast...
String: 40980 4982 255 0 19617 63 LBA
has appeared when comp with BIOS Award 08/23/1999-693-596-SMC-2A6LGX3JC-00
(Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG) from 08/23/99
recognized my hdd (Maxtor 40GB HD040H2).
I still cannot recognize that hdd at ATC-5000. But... I have CD_install_SuSE in CD-ROM and it always starts boot loader and recognize the hdd, not BIOS!
But I want my BIOS recognize hdd!

Maybe I must flash BIOS chip with old (backup) bios file and new (patched) bios file and again, again, till effect..?
It sometimes gives help as I has read at different letter at this forum!

OK, resume:
I have two (finally the six - small office network) comps. I have attached my
hdd MAXTOR D540X-40 to another 6VIA81P (Acorp), I set AUTOdetect in BIOS and,
after detecting hdd I noticed:
SIZE: |40980M| CYL: 4982 HEAD: 255(!) PRECOMP: 0 LANDZ: 19617 SEC: 63 MODE:LBA
Last evening I have spent my time doing that:
I put hdd MAXTOR into ATC-5000 (BIOSfile: 5000108A.bin).
I flashed this mainboar seven times (double): old (backup) version, new
version and so on... Always clear CMOS with UniFlash (v1.34) command. I
flashed mainboard with all the rules, I think (in real flat mode, everytime
with success). Last flashed, of course, with BIOSfile 5000108A.bin.
I have tried to detect hdd in BIOS: comp stops (hangs) and all I have to do is
Ctrl+Alt+Del...
Next I set in BIOS: AUTO |0 0 0 0 0| AUTO, restart comp - it hangs after
detecting(not detecting) all HDDs.
Next I set in BIOS:
SIZE: |40980M| CYL: 4982 HEAD: 255 PRECOMP: 0 LANDZ: 19617 SEC: 63 MODE:LBA
like I have seen at above comp. It hangs after etc...
Next I set in BIOS:
SIZE: |8455| CYL: 16383 HEAD: 16 PRECOMP: 0 LANDZ: 0 SEC: 63 MODE:AUTO
Comp stops (hangs) after detecting¬ detecting HDDs.
Next I set in BIOS:
SIZE: |33822| CYL: 16383 HEAD: 64 (!) PRECOMP: 0 LANDZ: 0 SEC: 63 MODE:AUTO
and comp stops as above...
Next I set in BIOS:
SIZE: |33824| CYL: 65535 HEAD: 16 PRECOMP: 0 LANDZ: 19617 SEC: 63 MODE:AUTO
and comp stops... eh,
SIZE: |0| CYL: 65536 HEAD: 16 PRECOMP: 0 LANDZ: 19617 SEC: 63 MODE:AUTO
not for trying reboot comp, only for probe BIOS settings (see SIZE:)!
Finally, I set in BIOS:
NONE --- --- and boot from CD_install_linux, start manual installation, start install/boot_installed system, boot_from_hda3.
But the problem is still going strong, isn't it? I must always boot from the CD_xx to detect that hdd. And I would like to buy a new 40GB hdd, but I am afraid it would be not right detected at this mainboard.
Maybe BIOSfile for ATC-5000 must be rebuilt (I don't know if it is the right word for doing this) again. Version 5000108A I got form rainbow-software.org,
notabene GREAT website!
I have not started a new thread with this issue, of course. Letter about new problem with comp wiht AMI bios was my mistake, I am sorry for that.
Hope that explanations will be enough, still NEED HELP,
Tomasz, POLAND.

TOMAZS:
I'm not sure if you saw this post from the original thread but I have moved it here - I think you have tried some of this but have a read through anyway. If the ATC machine does not support LBA then you may have to use the settings reported for NORMAL or LARGE mode. Also, the ATC machine may be having a problem recognising the full 40GB depending on the age of the ATC machine and BIOS. You might have to try the below with the 32GB limiting jumper set to see if it handles settings for a smaller usable size.
I'm only making an assumption but something about your problem suggests to me that your ATC PC is old and may not readily handle newer drives, so my suggestions are based on that.
Below is what I posted.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You seem to have access to two machines. If you want to recognise your 40GB drive on the ATC-5000 PC, why not temporarily attach the 40GB drive to the BX BIOS PC, which would surely have a drive auto detection. Run the auto detect, note the settings that it gives you for each Normal, Large and LBA modes, power off, and then transfer the drive back to the ATC-5000 PC. I am assuming the ATC-5000 PC has NO AUTO DETECT facility in the BIOS (if it does, why not use this). Put the manual settings into the BIOS on the ATC-5000 which you noted from the BX BIOS PC. You may have to use LARGE or NORMAL mode if there is not an LBA mode available to set - this is why I got you to write this information down.
If this does not work, maybe you have a jumpering or cabling issue between the ATC-5000 PC and the 40GB HDD. Or if the machine does not have HDD Auto Detect, it is also likely that the BIOS will not support a drive of this size in the first place. To me, if there is really no auto detect, both the PC and the BIOS sounds OLD.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope this helps.

I went to Maxtor to look for this drive (HD040H2), but I couldn't find that number in their database.
Could you please post the complete drive information?
Are you also sure the patched BIOS is installed (BIOS Eval line says "patched")?
I'm sure I replied to this post before the "move", but my response seems to be missing.

I think I also recall a KachiWachi reply to TOMAZS problem, not for sure, but I also thought there were a few more posts before mine by a few people. I guess depending on when people submit posts as related to the time of the move, that things do not always go through flawlessly with such moves.
