I changed the BIOS battery on a Acer Acros 486 (Acer v2.0 bios - A1GX m/b - ALi chipset) and now the BIOS halts at the IDE detection and says no hard drives are installed then asks for the "system disk". (i already tried changing all IDE to auto or user settings in BIOS).

No disk or floppy will work! it says I/O error.

From what i found out early Acers used a custom boot floppy to restore the system after major changes or when BIOS battery is removed and info gets lost.

I searched all the obvious Acer FTP etc and these Acer custom boot floppies are not available....help anyone worked on these before?

OK solved my problem.

I used Disk Manager HDD mounting software for my Seagate HDD.

The early "legacy 16bit DOS" Disk Manager download didn't fix it, but the latest Disk Manager DOS somehow activated the Floppy Drive then HDD in the Acer BIOS, although the Disk Manager setup fails after initialising everything. No matter its all back to normal now.

Phew almost threw out this lovely old system.
