Hi,

I need to upgrade the BIOS of my MOBO, whose brand/model is AOPEN AX34.
In the AOPEN forum, they gave me the following procedure, but I fail to
understand something which probably is given for discounted.

QUOTE

First, you must prefer one bootable disk (when updating my bios I prefer
Win98 startup disk) and one formatted diskette.Make sure to have the Winzip
utility installed in your system. Now,download and install the latest bios
file from aopen download center or you may access from this link.

Once done, saved it in your desktop so that its easy to locate the files. Go
to desktop and extract the files to your formatted disk and take note that
the bios bin file and exe file are combined so that it may run on a single
file to complete the process.

Restart your system and insert your startup disk then the system will lead
you to dos mode. When A prompt appear on your screen kindly removed your
startup disk and insert your formatted disk with binary and executable files
inside.Simply type this command. A:\>34P116 and press enter.Do not attempt
to power off your system while the process still going on wait until told to
do so.Restart and observed.Hope this will help

What did I do:

First attempt:

I created a W2K boot disk from the W2K CD Rom, I got 4 diskette.
I shutted down my PC, inserted diskette no. 1 and reboot my system. I
noticed that after entering the 4th diskette, the system was going to prompt
me for the set up of W2K, that I did not want.
In fact, the purpose was to open in DOS, or not?

Second attempt:

I created a boot disk for W98 (1 diskette) and made same procedure as above,
but the system hangs on a first screen saying that it cannot find...I don't
remember what.

Third attempt:

I said myself, W2K has got a Command Prompt, why not using that instead? So
I did enter the prompt, inserted the diskette containing the unzipped bin
and exe files of the BIOS, wrote the suggested command in DOS (A:\>34P116),
I heard that it did recognise the diskette, but nothing else, meaning that
nothing happened.

Fouth attempth - Ples read carefully

I have downloaded from http://www.bootdisk.com the Dr DOS Disk For Bios Flashing and saved on a diskette.
When I reboot with the diskette, I get the message:
NTLDR is missing...
Here I fail to understand because I've re-installed W2K from its original disc twice today and still I get the same message.
As a result, I cannot go to DOS, therefore I cannot update the BIOS.

You are my last hope.

Also, I did expect a way to save the old BIOS in case somthing goes wrong, is this included in the exe file I've downloaded from AOPEN?

Thank you!
Alex

The DR-DOS thing is a Diskette creator - you have to run it on your PC to create a new bootdisk .

Denniss,

Thank you very much.
Your first point solved my problem.
I made the diskette, rebooted and the system prompted me on A:>

BIOS has been successfully updated!

Cheers
Alex
