My friend at work found a computer in the trash, so of course we are checking it out. So far we have determined that it is a Compaq DeskPro 4000 DT 5233X. It still had everything in it but a hard drive.

Thing is it won't boot or POST...nothing pops up on the screen, nor are any beeps heard.

So of course we tested all the components in another computer, and all necessary parts are functional (DIMMS, CPU, Video, Power).

What I want to know is there is this switch looking thing on top of the power supply. It has 3 wires on it, and you can manually set the switch to either position by pushing the rod through the coil. It measues 10 and 20 ohms, depending on the which wires you continuity. It goes into the motherboard in the same connector as the front panel power switch does. There is nothing describing what it does.

I have seen these before on computers, so it isn't something new...just don't know what it is and what position it should be in.

Any help would be great...couldn't find much at Compaq, but I'm still weeding thru the stuff I did find.

We'll tackle the no-boot/POST next.

Thanks!!

Nope...that is on the back of the supply itself.

This sits above the supply, and is screwed to the case.

I's obviously there for a reason...

Anymore thoughts??

Nope...not the Smart Cover Lock...but there is one of those on the top of the riser card (little orange button).

I couldn't get to the site either...couldn't PING it either...

I think the BIOS has been hammered, but their BIOS Updater does not have a .BIN file. I think I know which part is the BIOS EEPROM, so I was going to remove it and put it in our burner, but I'm not sure, and I haven't really found any info that shows that about this board.

I'll see if I can borrow the camera at work and take a pic of this relay/switch thing.

Sorry...little late on the pics...but here is what it looks like.

Like I said, it's wired into the power on/off switch, but seems to have no function.

Any thoughts??

I think HWJ is right. Look at part #1 in this PDF, it looks exactly like your part.

I think it's the cover lock.

OK...so now what is it used for, and what position should it be in to do whatever it does?

I had thought the Smart Cover lock was the little orange button on the Card Riser...near the speaker, in the center of the cover. What is that button for then? (Smart Cover Sensor perhaps??)

I tried looking for the Quickspec sheet but couldn't find one for the standard desktop case model (this one isn't a tower)...do you know the document number for that one?

BTW, I liked the "Medieval Knight with the Mace" better soupy, but Clint works too... :D
