Hello @ all!

I know you have a lot of requests, but I hope you can help me too. I was also trapped by the AWARD 32GB Bug - my IBM 80 GB HDD only works when I set the jumpers for 32GB-mode, but then I would have to waste the remaining 50GB... I already searched the board and some of the links posted here for a patched BIOS that fits, but I didn't find one.

The BIOS works on a Chaintech Board (5RSA) with an ALi-Chipset.

Any solution is greatly appreciated - thanks for your efforts!

TIA,
Eddy

The latest BIOS version at Chaintech's site already supports large HDDs (over 64GB in size).

Thanks for your fast response, in part you were right: I had an old version of the BIOS, and after a little bit of searching I found the chaintech-update-Site, where I got a Version dated 12/11/1998. I flashed the BIOS and - it still does not work. Now the BIOS ident string is:

12/11/1998-ALADDIN5-2A5KKC39C-00

I've connected my 80GB IBM HDD (IC35L080AVVA07-0) as master and as slave, both times on the second IDE channel. Every time the machine tried to boot and hung when it had to detect the 80GB-HDD.

Do I probably have to do some other things, install additional software, do some UDMA-stuff on the disc or so? But I don't think that it'll help, because during POST, no software is executed I think...

Again, thanks for help!

TIA,
Eddy

Just found in another thread (http://www.wimsbios.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4181) a link to a BIOS-Patch-Site that contained a beta version of the 12/11/1998 AWARD 5RSA0-BIOS. I'm going to try it now, hope it'll work.

Just wanted to mention it. I'll be back at the board to report my experiences, as soon as I tried it.

@Rainbow: You're absolutely right, those are two different boards. Chaintech declares one as the 5RSA (the binary is called 5RSA0), and the other is the 5RSA2. According to Chaintech, there are no other 5RSAs so far.

@all: If anybody else hits the same problem like myself, take a look at
http://wims.rainbow-software.org/edwin/ , there you will be able to get a patched BIOS which is capable of supporting drives up to 128GB. In my case, I updated the BIOS and it immediately recognized my 80GB IBM HDD along with the exact size. I didn't have to do anything else. The HDD has been added to an running Win2K-Domain Controller system (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, etc.), and by now no problems occured.

A big THANK YOU to edwin@wimsbios.net !! He made my day. :D
