Don't have my hands on the machine now. I'll get the BIOS code, if needed, soon.

BIOS is Dell's latest for this laptop: A23
HD Model #: IC25N080ATMR04-0

The BIOS sees the drive as 14.5Gb (approx). The drive works correctly in an external enclosure attached to a WinXp D600.

The C600 is running Win2k, FWIW.

Thanks in adavnce for any help; Dell tech support was 1/2 step less than worthless.

Since that bios is not going to be an Award bios, not much we can do either. Did you make sure the bios harddisk entry is set to autodetect?

The BIOS only runs in autodetect: There appears to be no way to set the drive characteristics manually.

I'll try Hitachi tomorrow. Dell won't support it because the drive didn't come from them, even though it's almost certainly a BIOS defect.

If their latest bios doesn't solve your problem you're SOL on this one I fear.
