set up cannot upgrade due to third-party kernel

i was trying to upgrade my windows xp home edition sp2, and this was the message i got "set up cannot upgrade due to third-party kerne" i dont understand this is there a file im missing or something?

Kernel is part of the O/S.

That leads me to have first impressions that your O/S may be a little corrupt and creating problems for the upgrade.

If you want a clean install and have everything backed up, you should be able to run the setup program treating the situation as if you were doing a clean install, and setup should prompt for an upgrade candidate when it needs it.
