strange experiment.. USB dev. > USB->PS2 adpt. > ..

Hi everyone. I couldn't find the 'Stupid Questions' forum so I thought I'd post here

Now seriously, I'm trying to hack together the following:

<USB device> --> USB-to-PS2 mouse port adapt[e/o]r --> old PS2-to-serial adapt[e/o]r --> old serial-port bit (the ones with the L-bracket and 9-pin block connector that plugs into the system board) plugged into the USB connector on my DFI K6VB3+ Rev. AB+ motherboard.

I know it's totally crazy, but do you guys think such a thing could ever be rigged together? I'd appreciate any answers

No, not quite (I was afraid my description wouldn't be too clear, as I'm not a native to English).

I want to be able to hook up any kind of USB device -within reasonable limits- such as flash drives and web-cams. It's one of those 'round peg into a square hole' things .

..and one of these on my motherboard-

In essence, what I want is to plug the USB device into the first (USB->PS/2) adapter, that into the PS/2-to-serial adapter, that into the DB9 socket at the end of the flat cable-thingy -see pic above-, and that into the USB, not serial connector block on my motherboard.

I hope it makes more sense now .. at this point I realize it's totally crazy, but I still wonder what you guys might think about it.

I *suppose* you could put the adapters together...but you would have to MAKE SURE that the continuity pin-to-pin works out correctly...

I purchased mine for $15 (US)...though I have seen them for $12 retail...even less online...

I just did . Not exactly the way I'd initially planned on, though- I was working on something else and found the tail end (female) of a keyboard/mouse extension cord I'd once hacked to fix a k/b which 'd had its cord ripped off .. anyway, I then found one of those four-wire thingies you [used to] get with CD/DVD[-R] drives, the ones you hook[ed] up to the soundcard or motherboard.

And the little four-pin block connectors on that one looked like they'd fit the USB pins on my moBo just fine, so I hacked one end off, looked up all the pin-outs on the Web, soldered the four wires together, checked the whole thing with a multimeter (continuity), crossed my fingers and plugged it right in .. 2 seconds later the little 'New Hardware Found' window popped up.. yay!

Now I just need some heat-shrink tubing to finish it up properly, and I'm up and running!
