or at least 40GB if 160 is not possible.

Hmm - should be new enough to support HDD at least up to 64GB. What exactly is the problem ?
Detecting as 32GB or hanging during detection ?

A 40GB might work if you do not use auto detection but enter HDD parameters (as printed on your HDD) manually and activate LBA. IF you already have the 160GB then limit it to 32GB (via Jumper), all above should be accessible within your OS (W2K and newer, Linux).
