Hello!
I've bought a 80 GB IBM Harddrive. My bios don't accept the harddrive without 32 GB-lock.
I've got this bios:
BIOS Date: 08/21/99
BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
BIOS ID: 08/21/1999-VP4-686A-2A5LHM49C
BIOS Eval: W5187D4 V1.1 1019
Chipset: VIA 82C501 rev 2
Superio: VIA 686 rev 21 found at port 7h
I tried to instal the drive with the IBM Diskmanager , but it still doesn't work.
Has anyone of you a patch for my bios?
Thank you very much!
Oliver

Have you already tried the www.msi.com.tw site for a BIOS update? Your board seems to be the MS5187.
Just because they don't admit it doesn't mean it isn't fixed. MS5187 BIOS version 1.3 at the site doesn't have the bug. The version 1.1 on the site does have the bug although "your" version 1.1 is not listed.flueck wrote:yes, there's a bios update. but i think, this version isn't an update for de bug.

@ ajzchips and NickS :
Have you tried to open the newer bios with modbin ?
They all have a 10/1998 date and a different model display - the W5187D4 looks a little strange .
Maybe some sort of OEM-Version ?

Yes, that's one of the things I do as standard now.Denniss wrote:Have you tried to open the newer bios with modbin ?
I agree, that seems most likely. They seem to have left the same date in the ID string and the real date in the message, maybe worried about changing the ID string confusing the flash utility ?Denniss wrote:They all have a 10/1998 date and a different model display - the W5187D4 looks a little strange .

I asked the support. There's no bios update for 80 GB harddrives. I have to use an external PCI IDE Controler (Dawicontrol, Promise). Does anyone know an other solution? How much cost a PCI IDE Controler?für dieses Board gibt es kein BIOS welches 80GB
Festplatten unterstützt. Sie müssen sich einen externen
PCI IDE Controller besorgen ( Dawicontrol, Promise )
an diesem können Sie eine 80GB Festplatte betreiben.
Thanks!
Oliver
...except that I can't patch this one because the patch utility says it already supports discs up to 128 Gb.Denniss wrote:NickS or other moderators are able to patch your currently installed Bios to support up to 128GB .
There's no need to buy a controller card or to fiddle with diskmanagers.

I think I replied to the wrong question there, apologies to Denniss. The update on the website which the tech says doesn't support 80Gb, appears to support discs up to 128 Gb, so I can't patch that. In your position I would try that BIOS, as it may fix other things.
If you have a problem installing that BIOS or if you are worried that the board is not the same I can try to patch the BIOS you currently have installed, if you use "AWDFLASH dummy /pn savebios.bin /sy" to save it, zip it, and email it to me. Or I can see if it already has support according to Rainbow's utility.
