I have just installed a Seagate 20GB hard drive in a 3 year HP4535. I have formated the HD and run the system recovery CD. When I boot up now I hear the floppy drive run and right after that I get the message "Operating system not found" Pressing any key gets the message repeated, only thing to do is switch off. I cannot see any problems in the BIOS setup, but then I probably would recognise a problem anyway! I have phoenix BIOS setup.

Any help gratefully received.

the boot order seems to include the cd drive , in the boot device priority it shows the ATAPI CD-ROM. There is no ! mark next to the drive so I guess it is enabled,

OK. When booting from the startup disc I end up at a: and then I can change to c: In c: there are 6 files and 13 directories. Does this help me?

By the way thanks for all the input you guys are giving

No I haven't. Can I run the windows set up cd even though the machine will not boot up. If so do you thiink I should just re-run the set up or reformat the c drive again?
Thanks

You should make a startdisk with that CD on another machine, put the CD in your HP, put that startdisk in and boot from the startdisk. Watch which drive letter is assigned to the CD (probably E: ). Then if you're on the A:\> you should type

E:
cd \win98
setup.exe

and windows setup should start.

Thanks for the instructions. It's this sort of detail I need and cannot be found in any of the "help" books. I'll be trying this tomorrow and post the results!!
cheers
