Splash Screen and Mouse Garbage after RAM upgrade

About a year ago I upgraded my friend's PCChips M571, adding 2 sticks of 64MB PC66 RAM. After a clean install of 98SE, I had two problems: the Windows splash screen had a bunch of garbage on it after POST and before shutdown. there was a vertical line to the right of the mouse pointer. I had no idea...

sorry i took so long to respond. i ended up putting the 128mb back in and disabling the external cache to see if this was indeed the solution. the result: it still didn't solve the problem. i put the 24mb back in and enabled the cache and it works fine. i have no explanation for why this is happenin...

This is what I know: The RAM passed POST The RAM works fine in other machines The BIOS settings are correct The motherboard is physically ok (works with four SIMMs, just not four 32MB SIMMs). The problem exhibits itself in both 95B and 98SE The problem is there with both an 850MB HDD and a 40GB HDD....

Problem solved! It appears my problem lies with the external cache. Here's an explanation form Bytemare off the Experts-Exchange forum: Ok bad news first: 32MB is your maximal RAM-size for best performance Now lets explain: Cache-RAM needs a TAG-RAM to address the Cachelines. All TX-compatible Chips...

I ran AIDA32 Personal System with 24MB RAM. Here are the benchmarks: Memory Read: 46 MB/s Memory Write: unknown - AIDA32 was never able to complete test Then I reinstalled the 128MB of EDO RAM. It literally took 5 minutes for AIDA to load the program and data! Here are the benchmarks: Memory Read: 4...

hmmmmm, seems Sandra Professional 2003 requires Windows 98 and up. I've got 95B so it wouldn't install. I have a spare drive with 98 on it that I can throw in unless there's a different version of Sandra that can run under my existing OS.

I think I spoke to soon. The flash definitely updated the BIOS and the computer worked much better with 24MB of RAM. But when I put the 128MB of parity FPM back in, it exhibited the same problem! I tried the same amount of non-parity EDO RAM and only 64 in bank 0 and still the same thing. Why would ...

I see what I did wrong: flash36 si54paio.21i no "a:" It worked! And guess what? The problem seems to be fixed! I was about to scrap it, so I'd taken out the 128MB of RAM and tossed in 24MB. I flashed it and it works better now with just the 24MB! Thanks so much for all your help. I really appreciate...

Seeing as I've nothing to lose, I thought I'd flash the bios. I've never used their flash utility, flash36, before and can't find any documentation (searched the wimbios forum as well). When I boot from the flash disk, I run flash36.exe. The screen reads: Usage: Flash [drive:][path] file_name Note: ...

It took a good 90 minutes for 95B to install on the 850MB drive. Afterwards when I went to add "games" in Windows Setup (in Add/Delete programs), it took about 20 minutes! This is about a 1MB file and generally installs in seconds (I copied the .cab files to the c: drive so it's not a CD-ROM issue)....

Running 95B. Tried installing 98SE but it ran like a dog. Yes, DMA is enabled. The old 850MB drive didn't have partitions, so I couldn't reproduce the problem. I did a reformat on it and reinstalled 95B and it did some strange things too (took 15-20 minutes to add a 1MB update in Windows setup!). I ...
