Hi Sharedoc, Have not tried to run your code, but a couple of comments (if you have solved the satbility problem, then please ignore this). You will likely need to execute the "cpuid" instruction before getting the cycle counts to serialize instruction execution - without this, some intructions will...

Update of DeepSleep utility
I've updated the deepsleep utility page http://home.pacbell.net/wmarcusm/deepsleep/ with version 1.4 and added a version for the Linux 2.6 kernel. This version fixes a bug in the previous versions that prevented the utility from working with most non Thinkpad laptops. I've tested it against my TP600...

It would be healthy, if it was possible to enable L2 Cache also before loading of OS kernel. What can you tell on it? There is only one nuance, - if from Deep Sleep utility we have a source code and it can be rewrote at any moment somehow for enabling L2 Cache of source codes is not present!: ( wma...

brokencase, I've added the source files for the DOS/Win3x/Win9x versions to the download page http://home.pacbell.net/wmarcusm/deepsleep/ Most of the code is either devoted to finding the correct PCI device (pxii4x), of computing the CPU frequency. The code that sets up the deepsleep transition is ...

Confirmation: DeepSleep DOS version 1.2 works now perfect also from autoexec.bat I'm try to start DeepSleep DOS version 1.2 from autoexec.bat in WinXP Pro SP2, but it looks like it's not start sometimes. Why can it occur? Dr. Morg, If you are running NT/2K/XP, then install the 2K/XP version. The DO...

Wmarcusm, This is just to confirm that the register based Win9X version 1.1 does not work in my TP600E either. Anyway, the dos version is basically good enough, so do not spend too much effort in legacy os support. Ok, I found a bug in the code. I uploaded the new version (1.2) to the website. The ...

Version 1.1 appears to behave exactly the same way as 1.0. Works from desktop but does not work from autoexec.bat nor from Windows startup folder. How is it with XP version? Does it work always? I wonder if the reason for not working always is that the processor is in a state (which?) where there i...

DOS DeepSleep utility does not work as expected from Windows98 Startup folder. I can see it execute but it does not have effect in changing processor speed. Looks like the utility works fine when the processor is idling. But if there is heavy load, it does not work. I uploaded versions (1.1) of Dee...

DOS SpeedStep utility does work in Windows98, when I open a MS-DOS command prompt window and run the utility there. Really. I find that surprising. I thought win98 (std) created a virtual DOS box when running legacy x86 DOS apps (this is what OS2/Warp does). Apparently each ms-dos window is given t...

Suprise DOS DeepSleep does not produce the desired outcome when used in Windows98 autoexec.bat. I can see the SpeedStep utility is run as part of autoexec.bat, but when the Windows98 finishes loading, the processor speed is lower speed. Propably there is a switch back to lower speed within Windows ...

wmarcusm, so with your deepsleep util. Do we need to hardware mod the cpu?? or pretty much just stick the cpu, say a p3 650 in there and then just run the util? ProtoColD, If used in a TP 600e, you need to modify the MMC-2/P3 per Sharedoc, et al, discussion in this thread. The 600e series motherboa...
