refusal to boot up
I recently installed a new pci modem card , the problem is that the pc stops booting up before even the memory check innitiates , if I remove the modem even slightly out of the socket the pc boots up ok and recognises the new modem , once installed it operates perfectly but will not re-boot without again removing the modem card , could this be a setting within the bios menu ?
Have you tried it in a different PCI slot ?

yes I have swapped all my pci slots around and re-installed them all but still have the same problem, I am currently just leaving the pc on 24/7 but using the powersaving for monitor and hard drive.
Are you saying you just move it out for a fraction of a second and drop it back in, during the boot process ? Sounds dodgy.mxh1668 wrote:I if I remove the modem even slightly out of the socket the pc boots up ok and recognises the new modem , once installed it operates perfectly but will not re-boot without again removing the modem card , could this be a setting within the bios menu ?
Ideas:
- Can you try the card in another machine or vice versa ?
- Is it easy to return the card (or is it mail order)?
- Have you tried disabling the on-board COM ports in the BIOS ?
- Can your BIOS automatically allocate PCI IRQs and if so does it ?
