bad checksum

Hi

I got a problem with an old mobo. (pentium 233)
Everytime on boot it displays the following mess:

CMOS bad checksum error

Then i can press F1 and i get to BIOS.
I change time and date and save it.
Now it starts up and everythings workin fine now.

My guess is that the battery is dead.
Am i correct ??
Is there a difference in those battery's ??
(cuz i got some ole mobo's lyin around, so could i pry one off them ?)

Batteries;
These days, usually a 3V coin-shaped Lithium battery, pretty much all the same - xx2032 ?

In the past - could have been 4.8V or 3.6V NiCd rechargeable soldered to the board, or 3V Lithium button cell integrated with the CMOS (Houston Tech/Dallas/Viking), or 6V battery pack plugged into the board on a long wire...
