FIC? bios update
Should be one of the smaller chips, left from the white PCI slots. UMC or SMC should be printed on it.

Supposing this works, how does a "shareware" bios work? If I upgrade and don't pay the shareware fees on time, will my CPU Explode? Or will my computer just cease to function (as if it's worth more than a doorstop right now anyway). I'm seriously thinking of swapping out the HD with a 6 gb hd and putting 30 gig in my mac.He might actually prefer a MRBIOS BIOS... then.

MR_FIC_.ZIP... both releases are there (just the different I/O).
What really gets me is that this computer is a good 8 years old. 8 years ago, a 30 gig HD would have cost a pretty penny probably > $1000 or more? Why would someone install a HD that big in a computer that could never have the capability to use it?
food for thought I guess.
BTW, I really appreciate all of the help I've gotten from all of you wonderful folks.
Thanks,
Russell
IDE interface is compatible all the time - the only thing you need for big HDD support is correct BIOS.
The BIOS is shareware but there should be no limits.

well, the problem may be solved. I just spoke with the computer guy at my workplace (the original source of this computer). He gave me a 3 GB Drive to try instead of the 30. If this works, then I won't need the bios upgrade.
