Hi All,
Newbie here.
Just getting involved in all this as I have an Abit LX-6 m'board with i440LX chipset. Groan; limitations on DIMM memory and max CPU speed etc - should'a waited for the BX set. Even the simple task of increasing HD from 2Gb upwards seems to pose a problem!
Does anyone know the max HD capacity for this chipset/BIOS (I can't confirm the exact version of BIOS until I get home but will do ASAP)?
Cheers,
Steven.
Abit LX-6 i440LX chipset (2A69JA1AC / 2A69JA1AC-7T)
Bios LX6-7h.bin at ftp://ftp.mathematik.uni-marburg.de/pub ... /bios/lx6/ can be patched for 128 GB HDD:
although you would have to test it
Interesting that yours says -7T
Can you post the complete string ?
Code: Select all
BIOS ID string: 10/13/97-i440LX-W977TF-2A69JA1AC-7H
BIOS OEM string: GREEN AGP/PCI/ISA SYSTEM
INT13h Extensions...Present: old-style
New-style code found at 3577
=> 32GB bug patched successfully
Interesting that yours says -7T

Ah - looks like you have the LX6C. Rainbow patched a Beta BIOS for that one...check the "tested" link for ABit LX6.
Tested patched BIOSes. Untested patched BIOSes.

Hi NickS,
Sorry - the BIOS ID I listed was what I anticipate it to be having searched the 'net high and low for info on what my BIOS *should* be - given I'm sat at work 100 miles from my PC(!).
The Abit LX6 manual gives example on how to flash a new bios, so presuming:
1. the BIOS version is that which I suggested above;
2. I get to grips with the method in the motherboard manual for flashing a new BIOS
would you reckon Rainbow's update will see me clear? (All I need is support for 20Gb).
So saying, maybe I should just buy the HD, plug it in and see what happens, and take it from there?
What I intended my original question to be was basically, would the simplest Abit 6LX motherboard, with the Award BIOS detailed, accomodate a 20Gb drive. There - I've said, and I'm not ashamed (years of being stupid, don't you know!)!
Cheers,
Steven.

Hi again,
Now, will this '-7T' version work with HD > 10Gb (or is the cut-off 15.2Gb?), or will I need Rainbow's patch? Incidentally, I followed Wim's link to the site with all the Award BIOS updates (awd741.zip) etc. Are any of these what I need?
All your help will be VERY greatly appreciated, for sure.
Steven.

Sunday, 19:50 - 8 hrs since I bit the bullet and went for it!
Thanks NickS - I used Rainbow's LX6C patch, the BIOS is upgraded, and my new 40Gb Samsung is recognised.
What took me so long is that I don't have any cloning software, so had o reinstall Win XP et al - anyways, thanks to all for giving me the confidence to mess with the BIOS; there's life life in my ol' girl yet!
Always strugglin' to keep up...
Thanks.
I understand also that the Abit board I have used only to be capable of accepting a PII-300. Since applying Rainbow's patch, the BIOS now sees a PIII-556 I have lying around on auto-detect, but then sends me to the CPU SoftMenu to configure the setup correctly. Alas, no amount of fiddling with the User Defined settings (multiplier/external clock - should be 8.5x/66MHz I think) permits a boot to XP. Back to the PII-300...
Cheers all,
Steven.
