I have been trying to upgrade my CPU from a Pentium4 1.7GHz to a Pentium4 2.4 MHz. When new chip is installed, computer will not boot. Power comes on, fans run but screen is black. I put old chip back and all works fine. Thought it might be power so I bought new Power supply 350w(almost double the old 180w). Still won't start. Thorough research indicates mobo supports this CPU. Upgraded bios. According to data, the new CPU runs at 400/533MHz system bus. In the bios, system bus is set at 400.
Should I change this to 533? If I do, will the system I am running(old CPU)
croak? Should I change a jumper on the motherboard? Clear cmos?
Finally, do I know what the heck I am talking about???[/b]

What motherboard do you have ?
You may need to upgrade your Bios, maybe your Bios does not know what CPU the new one is and does not boot.
With a Bios capable of identifying your CPU it should run even underclocked with FSB400. Are you really sure your 2.4 GHZ is a FSB533 and not a FSB800 CPU ? Does the new CPU get warm or hot or does it stay cold ?

I did do bios upgrade. At least I went to a site & found the bios specific for my mobo and then downloaded. It was automatic and in windows environment; no floppy stuff; so I think I am okay.

As to whether CPU gets hot or stays cold, I have not checked.
Can you go in bios and enter some "optimal" settings or something like that? Identified as Intel bios.

Ahh, Intel mainboard, they usually do not start if they don't know the CPU. You should have not thrown the box away, a FSB800 CPU should not work in an Intel mainboard designed for FSB400/533.
Check the Processor ID-number, maybe they sent you a 90nm Prescott core P4 and your board requires 130 nm Northwood or older
