Make sure it's not disabled by jumpersettings !
AFAIK there are some jumpers to enable/Disable OnBoard Sound or set it to secondary Sound(usually disables it too)
Please check your manual how to set the jumpers correctly

no jumpers onboard apart from usual ie clear cmos
Is "On Board Sound" enabled in Chipset Features Setup?

my problem is that bios setup doesn't have the enable feature even though the manual shows it
What BIOS have you flashed
The one I've downloadedhas this option.

i flashed 101801.bin using award763 obtained from matsonic web site.
there were no errors reported on flashing.
using awdedit v1 i agree that the option is available in bin file.
however bios setup still doesn't show the onboard sound/modem enable/disable
i have even cleared the cmos using the jumpers as described in manual.
? when cmos is cleared are only values cleared or is everything erazed from chip

Clearing CMOS should cause CMOS Checksum Error and BIOS will set all settings to default values.
Did the sound work before?

yes onboard sound worked before, have tried reflashing with bin saved from 101801 flash ,option still not available
i can only assume that bios chip is faulty but would of thought that a bios error message would say so

BIOS chip is OK, it would not work with bad one.

thanks for those words of comfort ,perhaps an idea is to flash the original bios i have versions 101801 and 063000 there must be previous versions due to the age of the mb any ideas where i could get these, they are not listed on matsonic website
Did you clear the CMOS successfully (i.e. did you get CMOS checksum failure error after clearing)?

yes got checksum error ,if my response was no what would your answer have been
it sound to me as though u had a bad flash in the past
during flashing did u receive the message or something like
'....not updated' refering to part of the flash process not being written
if so this could be the section that refers on onboard perifs

thanks for your response ,it would seem that 'rainbow' and other forum viewers are not as knowing as they think, due to the lack of responses and decent ideas.
the pc was bought second hand so i don't know what happened in the past
if this had occurred surely it would happen again on reflashing.awardedit on loading oldbin file indicates that onboard sound/modem defaults are present.
but why is the enable/disable option not in the bios setup for either sound or modem
? why should clrcmos still have default settings stored, how can i clear all values ,before reflash .
