Sharedoc said with his advise it should run at 650.

@ sharedoc
look at this link:
http://www.eonet.ne.jp/~sawarabi/siryou ... _sspec.htm

here you can see that the cpuid for my cpu is 681

Holgi,

Looks like your PIII-650 has a legitime CPUID.

Maybe SpeedStep mod does not work for it because it has different CPUID, and bios may treat it differently from 700 and 750 MHz PIII's. We need more evidence.

May I suggest buying another PIII to mod (700MHz or faster)?

Today I have decided to process my keyboard a drier that labels on keys in regular intervals fitted.
After this procedure at start began to arise the typical 08611 error.
Having looked on the Internet I have understood, that have killed my TrackPoint :(
Has found some sites on which procedure of disable TrackPoint in "base 128 cmos" is described, but any of them has not helped to make it! :(
As I have understood, to repair it not so probably, - only replacement of the keyboard will help to solve this problem.
But while I need to work, and this error does not give my laptop to boot.
Please, help me to disable TrackPoint in BIOS.

Beforehand I thank!

Dr Morg,

I have the similar problem in my 600E that the keyboard cable has been twisted too many times, and it generates the 08611 error unless I disable the trackball. The keyboard cable is the wider one, and it typically breaks from the steep angle about 10 mm from the connector.

There are two ways to disable trackpoint
- In Windows ibm thinkpad configuration utility
- by editing CMOS byte 20 lowest 2 bits -> "01"

It is the same byte that controls the L2 cache as well.

So you should edit the byte to contain "09" so it will boot L2 off and trackpoint off.

0A boots L2 off and trackpoint on.

02 boots L2 on and trackpoint on

01 boots L2 on and trackpoint off

Now you face a problem how to edit the CMOS. You have two choices: (1) borrow a keyboard or (2) fix temporarily the keyboard. Fixing can be done by twisting the keyboard cable with fingers and hoping it to have contact enough to enter to bios hex editor.

So press -> F1 (to enter bios) -> config -> ctrl-d -> bios hex editor -> go to byte 20 -> edit to 09

I have a multiplier by 5

the natural multiplier for my 650Mhz CPU is 6.5

Why the hell does my 600E drive the CPU only with multiplier 5 instead of 6.5

What is the difference between sharedocs CPU with id 683 and mine with id 681.

There must be a way to force my 600E to drive it with a multiplier of 6.5

why does the mod works by sharedocs 683 but none with my 681.

Is here someone who have a cpu like mine (PIII-650Mhz and id 681) by whom works the mod ???

Holgi,

Don't blow up your brain. Just go buy 700Mhz or faster PIII and try again.

How effective is this so called speedstep mod and is it more or less effective on different cpu's?

The FSB MOD

I have taken Henri_S' photo orginally posted by Sharedoc and hopefully clarified the 8% overclock 108FSB mod.

The mod is soldered onto the motherboard itself. In the photo you can just see the processor socket on the left hand edge. Goodluck.

Holgi,

There is a good choice of cheap MMC2-PIII's in www.ebay.de

You can also sell your old PIII there.

Similar, not I one such lucky beggar!;)
But nevertheless, whether you could repair a cable?
On mine ThnkPad it looks very fragile, the history with the keyboard as though has not repeated!
I would like to repair a cable since has got used to use TrackPoint, and PS/2 port very badly works, - contact constantly vanishes!: (

Ñan you advise something?

Thanks!
Replacement in byte 20 a bit 0A => 09 has solved a problem, but took place to be a by-effect, - at the first booting in WinXP the keyboard completely did not work! I have power off and have again turn it on Laptop, only then all began to work perfectly!

I have read all this forum, but and have not understood up to the end, whether it is possible to enable SpeedStep and if so, that it is particularly necessary to solder and to what to connect?
Can somebody post here photos ready mod and circuits which need to be soldered?

I work on IBM ThinkPad 600E Model: 2645-8AU
CPU: MMC-2 Intel PIII 600 (now works on frequency 500MHz)
Family: 6
Model: 8
Stepping: 6
Revision: cC0
L2 cash: enabled by PowerLeap

Thanks!
